No Link Between ADHD Medications and Drug Abuse

For a few years now, there have been some worries among parents and patients that ADHD medication had more than just short-term side effects on the children taking them. One of the most recent concerns regarding this was the possibility of these medications making children more vulnerable to substance abuse later on in life. These worries have been around for a few years now, with some reports of cases where parents refused the medication for their children out of fear of this development.

ADD/ADHD Medications and Drug Abuse

Did you know that Ritalin (methylphenidate) Adderall (dextroamphetamine) and all their variants used to treat ADD/ADHD are among the most commonly abused drugs today? According to a National Institute on Drug Abuse survey of 2003-4, 10% of 12th graders had misused ADD/ADHD medication in the past year (that is more than those prescribed the medicines) and 34% of those with a legal prescription for the drugs had been approached to sell or trade their medication.
